What Is Everyday Self Defense®?
Everyday Self Defense® training includes an introduction to personal safety awareness, conflict avoidance skills, stress reduction, self-care and practice with simple, effective physical skills. Participants learn pro-active personal safety techniques and positive communication skills, based on Janet Nelson's unique "ABCs of self-protection."
In an Everyday Self Defense® session, participants truly participate! We practice various defense skills, including use of voice, body language, body placement, avoidance moves and escape techniques. Specific drills offer a hands-on learning opportunity with the easily understandable ABCs of self-protection. Participants learn to improve their awareness, balance and control in threatening situations. Tap Presentations for more information.
Janet has developed online classes that include audio and video exercises that can be followed-up with virtual, live presentations. In both her online and virtual presentations, participants learn very simple but effective personal safety awareness techniques. The classes are lively, active and engaging. Who Is Janet Nelson?
Janet Nelson, MSW, ACSW, LCSW combines over forty years' experience as a social worker and a martial artist in her Everyday Self Defense programs. Over the last three decades, she has applied her martial arts experience to the growing personal safety needs of social workers and other human service workers, including child and adult protective service investigators. Since 2005, she has routinely trained Kansas-licensed social workers. Kansas is the only state that requires self defense training for licensed social workers.
Janet's perspective enables her to consider both professional practice standards and the need for worker safety awareness as well as self defense skills. While the overall theme of an Everyday Self Defense® training is to prevent, avoid and escape violence, Janet recognizes that, unfortunately, social workers and other human service workers need help and can no longer ignore their personal safety on the job.
She has developed online classes that include audio and video exercises that can be followed-up with virtual, live presentations. In both her online and virtual presentations, participants learn very simple but effective personal safety awareness techniques. The classes are lively, active and engaging.
In 2014, Janet testified as an expert witness for the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The case involved the murder of a worker during a home visit with a managed care client. The original decision was approved by the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission on March 4, 2019. Tap here for a link to the final decision. This was the first case of workplace violence considered by OSHA’s Review Commission. It set a precedent for the application of the General Duty Clause in the health and human service workplace.
In 2019, Janet was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Association of Women Martial Arts Instructors. Five years later she was inducted with a Golden Life Award as Master Janet Nelson by the Universal Martial Arts Hall of Fame for 50 years of " dedication to the martial arts with honor, loyalty and integrity."
